About the Northern Hawk Owl

  • Scientific Name: Surnia ulula
  • Wingspan: 18 in.
  • Habitat : Sparse forests, swamp valleys, and meadows in Northern North America, Europe, and Asia
  • Conservation Status: Least Concern (Population decreasing)
  • Fun Fact: 94% of the diet of northern hawk owls in Eurasia consists of microtine voles (only about 20% for those in North America). Microtine voles have a 3-4 year cycle of abundance, so the population of the northern hawk owl cycles similarly!
