About the Gyrfalcon

  • Scientific Name: Falco rusticolus
  • Wingspan: 3.5 to 5.3 ft.
  • Habitat : Mountainous regions and cliff faces in North America, Europe, and Asia
  • Conservation Status: Least Concern (Population stable)
  • Fun Fact: Gyrfalcons have historically been used for falconry. In 12th century China, the emperor of the Liao dynasty imposed a tax on the trade of gyrfalcons, which was wildly unpopular and was one of the causes of the Jurchen rebellion which eventually overthrew the dynasty!
